Banner Health Carport, USA
Banner Health uses Canadian Solar modules to generate electricity at its Mesa Corporate Center.
This project was financed through a third party Power Purchase Agreement, with a solar power purchase rate set below the utility’s (SRP) rate. Which means Banner Health has been saving money since day one. Even more impressive, the solar power purchase rate will not increase for the length of the 20-year contract term, saving Banner Health significant operating capital and allowing it to redirect resources toward critical patient care initiatives.
The solar parking canopies cover over 45,000 square feet and provide shaded protection for 260 vehicles. Natural Power and Energy, the installer company, successfully deployed a phased 12-week construction project at the active site, keeping the Banner Health parking lot operational during installation. At the time of commissioning, the system was the largest distributed system connected to a single SRP meter.
In its first year of operations the system delivered 1,052,433 kWh - 8% above expectations. It also averted 642 tons of carbon dioxide emissions from SRP’s power plants in its first year, not to mention eight tons of methane and 10 tons of nitrous oxide.
Headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona, Banner Health is one of the largest private employers in the state. In 2011, it was named one of the Top Five Large Health Systems in the country based on clinical performance, according to Thomson Reuters. Banner Health was recognized for having superior survival rates, better long-term outcomes, better adherence to accepted care protocols and patient-safety standards. They were also acknowledged for shorter hospital stays, higher patient-satisfaction scores and fewer patient complications. Located in seven states, Banner Health owns or manages 23 health care facilities as well as physician practices and nationally recognized research centers.
