Position Summary:

This position is responsible for leading the project and structured finance activities of CSI’s Energy Business unit in Latin America. Activities will include developing and maintaining relationships with local and international financial institutions, transaction structuring, negotiation and closing of limited recourse construction and permanent debt financings. The candidate will ensure that the Project & Structured Finance team for Latin America has sufficient resources and training to successfully collaborate with other team members in development, construction, legal and corporate finance groups to manage investment and project risks to maximize value to Canadian Solar. 


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage a team of project finance professionals focused on Latin America that will be responsible for structuring, negotiating and closing limited recourse construction and permanent debt financings for solar energy projects developed by Canadian Solar.
  • Advise development team on availability and anticipated terms of debt financing prior to completion of project feasibility. Develop new banking relationships and maintain current knowledge of market conditions.
  • Collaborate with development team to advance Canadian Solar’s competitive position in selected markets throughout Latin America by exploring and maintaining new avenues to financing development, construction and ownership for each target market.
  • Support CSI Energy Business’s objectives by collaborating with development, legal, technical and corporate finance groups with frequent communications among working groups located in the Americas, Europe and China.
  • Support initial project evaluation and investment modeling by working with external advisors, in close coordination with development team leaders, to provide up-to-date information concerning local tax, legal and regulatory matters impacting CSI’s investments.
  • Provide guidance to financial analysts on specifics of project agreements to ensure that financial models accurately reflect known transaction terms.
  • Maintain familiarity with financial models and provide guidance to financial analysts on required changes as deal evolves.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Finance, or Economics; Master’s Degree preferred.
  • Must have 10+ years of relevant experience in the field of project finance with an emphasis on independent power in the emerging markets and recent closing experience of renewable energy project financings in Latin America.
  • Proven track record of successful project finance closings, including experience with export credit agencies, multi-lateral organizations, development financial institutions, and international commercial lenders, from development stage through to final completion.
  • Strong interdisciplinary skills covering financing, tax, accounting, financial modeling, and contract analysis with ability to contribute to or guide project due diligence.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, including the ability to convey ideas and positions clearly.
  • Ability to establish positive collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders, and work within a multi-disciplined team setting, while retaining accountability for results.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, unstructured, results oriented environment.
  • English fluency. Proficiency in Spanish, with Portuguese desirable.

Description:

This position will be a leader on the energy business development team, from greenfield development to commercialization of solar and microgrid projects.  The individual will be an integral part of the customer / third party contact as it relates to the development of the energy business in Canada. 

This position will work closely with the Business Development, EPC, and Project Finance department leaders to develop implementation strategies for Canadian Solar’s portfolio of projects / markets.  The location is primarily in Canada, however it may be within the USA or other regions with close proximity. This will involve in depth understanding of solar programs and market dynamics.  This position will be responsible for review, assessment, and risk management relating to permitting, land, connection, site layout, and program requirements and be a key decision maker with respect to project feasibility and approval.  Developing key partnerships with contractors, engineering firms and advisors for strategy execution is key to the success.

He/she must insure that contract requirements are met. Knowledge of all regulator codes, standards and permits including, but not limited to, environmental, interconnection, and integrated photovoltaic system applications would be highly desirable.

Duties include, but are not limited to managing and directing the permit application process for major infrastructure projects in Canada, assuring compliance with the regulatory requirements

 

Responsibilities: 

The successful candidate will have responsibilities that include, but are not limited to:

 

  • Lead multifunctional, high-value projects and RFQ/RFPs, ensuring that cross-functional and other teams are established and that all activities are managed and coordinated in a manner that achieves optimum results.
  • Manage and lead the development of utility system interconnected projects in accordance with local utility company requirements.
  • Negotiations for definitive agreements and EPC contracts with support from senior management, finance, EPC, and legal departments.
  • Effectively communicate project expectations to internal and external team members in a timely and clear fashion.
  • Liaise with project stakeholders on an ongoing basis.
  • Obtain real property rights, as required for new projects, with support from finance and legal departments.
  • Determine and assess need for additional staff and/or consultants and make the appropriate recruitments if necessary during project / market cycles.
  • Set and continually manage project expectations with team members and other stakeholders.
  • Assist with project budget development, forecasting, reporting and cost management as appropriate.
  • Identify and resolve issues and conflicts within the multi-functional team.
  • Determine the frequency and content of status reports from the project team, analyze results, and troubleshoot problem areas.
  • Proactively manage changes in project / market scope, identify potential crises, and devise contingency plans.
  • Define project / market success criteria and disseminate them to involved parties throughout project life cycle.
  • Coach, mentor, motivate and supervise project team members and contractors, and influence them to take positive action and accountability for their assigned work.
  • Build, develop, and grow any business relationships vital to the success of the project.
  • Confer with engineers, managers, customers, and others to discuss the project, prepare project technical proposals and documents.
  • Monitors the status of the project / market to ensure documentation is submitted according to schedule.
  • Attend events, conferences and training sessions to understand market trends and improve project development process.

 

Qualifications & Experience:

  • 10 years’ experience with team leadership, construction project management, permitting, solar programs, and integrated photovoltaic systems are essential. 
  • Post-secondary education – engineering, permitting, or environmental focus
  • Five plus years of utility scale solar project management experience
  • Solid communication skills
  • Accuracy and attention to detail
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships internally and externally with staff, management, volunteers, clients, suppliers, community partners and external stakeholders

Description:

The Business Development Manager will be responsible for managing the day to day operations of Business Development in India and Bangladesh. Will coordinate the legal and administrative processes necessary for the development of greenfield projects until they are ready to build. Will evaluate, negotiate and support the execution of project acquisitions. Once the projects are ready to build he will support the team in charge of selling the project to end buyers, under the coordination of the central team.

He will have experience on supervising technical, legal and financial advisors. Knowledge of the Energy and Solar regulation in India, and experience in Energy projects permitting. Familiarity with PV rights acquisitions, energy projects due diligence, and EPC and O&M contracts negotiation, experience liaising with local administration and government officials to develop PV opportunities and a good network of potential partners and advisors are a must.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Overview the India solar energy market and keep up to date to market and regulatory developments
  • Use its own contacts and develop working relationships with the relevant government bodies.
  • Maintain good relationship with developers and other players in India.
  • Coordinate and manage external suppliers to successfully implement the strategy with a goal to develop 500 MW over the next three years.
  • Originate opportunities to build a pipeline of profitable projects.
  • Prepare and present project memorandums to be submitted to Investment Committee in order to get the internal approval for the investments
  • Support when needed the negotiation of projects acquisitions, EPC, O&M, and selling contracts to end buyers
  • Support the preparation of progress reports, proposals, requirements documentation, and presentations.
  • Ensure that all business activities are performed with the highest ethical standards and in compliance with the Canadian Solar Solution Code of Business Conduct.
  • Adhere to all health and safety rules and company policies.
  • Complete other duties and projects as assigned.

 

Qualifications and Experience:

  • BS in Engineering, Law or economics is required; a Master’s degree is preferred
  • Ability to create and defend qualitative and quantitative analysis of investment opportunities
  • Minimum 5+ years’ experience on energy project development in India
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and strong ability to explain complex technical topics and systems.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills both in English and Hindi.
  • Ability to elicit cooperation from a wide variety of sources, including upper management, clients and other departments
  • Understanding of energy systems, including the proper usage of basic components and conventional installation and interconnection methods.
  • Experience working with an international organization strongly preferred.
