Thunder Bay Airport, Canada

Canadian Solar Supplies EPC Service for the Thunder Bay Airport Solar Farm, chosen as a Finalist for the Intersolar North America 2012 Solar Project Award.

The first utility-scale solar installation on airport authority land in Ontario, Thunder Bay International Airport was completed and connected in December of 2011. The 8.5 AC megawatts solar project was featured in the “Shine Ontario” campaign promoting the benefits of green energy, spearheaded by SkyPower and Canadian Solar. The Thunder Bay Airport solar installation was selected as a finalist for the Intersolar North America 2012 Project Award.

Canadian Solar, already established as one of the largest module manufacturers in the world, deployed 36,660 premium performance CS6P modules to power the solar installation and was awarded the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract. Capable of providing project, finance, operations and maintenance support, Canadian Solar Solutions Inc., a division of Canadian Solar Inc., specializes in delivering customized and cost-effective turnkey solar solutions. The Thunder Bay Airport project was developed and is currently owned by SkyPower Global, one of Canada’s largest owners and developers of solar energy projects. SkyPower prospects, develops, finances, owns and operates solar energy projects from the initial discovery stages through to commercial operation.

The Thunder Bay solar plant will generate enough renewable energy to power almost 15,000 homes over a 20-year period and offset approximately 5,061 metric tons of carbon per year, helping to secure the province as the greenest in Canada.

"Canadian Solar is a strong partner who’s bankability, EPC knowledge, expertise and project support paves the way to successful project construction and completion,” said Kerry Adler, CEO of SkyPower.
