Shellharbour Shopping Centre, Australia

With more and more Australian businesses have been turning to solar energy, Stockland, a leading property developer in Australia, has selected a bid by Canadian Solar and its partner Todae Solar to install a 1.22MW rooftop solar system on its Shellharbour Shopping Centre in Wollongong, New South Wales. The system demonstrates Stockland’s commitment to leadership in sustainability and at the time of completion will be Australia’s largest single building rooftop solar system and one of the top 10 largest installed across the country.

Daniel Buchanan, Stockland Regional Retail Manager for NSW South, said the company had been considering large scale solar for the portfolio for some time. “While we have installed a number of smaller solar PV systems, and learned from the experience, it is only now that the economics and time is right for us to set a renewable energy target and commit to a range of projects across our portfolio.”

“Since completing our $330 million redevelopment of Stockland Shellharbour in 2013 and receiving our 4 Star Green Star rating by the Green Building Council of Australia, we have continued to add initiatives to benefit our customers, the community and the environment,” he continued.

Construction on the system was commenced in March 2015. Stockland expects the system with 4001 Canadian Solar 305 W solar modules to generate significant green electricity enough to offset approximately 1,700 tonnes of CO2 annually.

“This is a pilot system and is a demonstration of our belief in solar changing the landscape for energy procurement for Australian businesses. We are glad to be at the forefront of this evolution within Australian industry and have partnered with Canadian Solar, a world-leading product and solution provider,” stated Chris King, Project Manager with Stockland. While large-scale rooftop systems are prevalent on shopping centres & malls in North America, Stockland is the first such business in Australia to demonstrate similar leadership.
